The Institute for Medical Quality (IMQ) offers numerous programs to help and support hospitals in promoting high-quality health care. The programs involve physicians in a range of activities, including assessment, consultation, education, and physician participation as panel members.

Medical Staff Education and Consultation

IMQ offers consultation and custom education programs that help physicians to effectively fulfill their role in promoting quality of care in hospital and other settings. Physician consultants can assess and recommend improvements or deliver custom education programs related to the fulfillment of medical staff responsibilities, including the oversight of quality and patient safety programs.

Peer Review Consultation

Peer Review Consultation provides objective evaluation by peers of the clinical practice of one or more physician members of a hospital medical staff, clinic, or group practice. Using an educative and consultative approach, the evaluation is conducted by physicians with current expertise in the clinical specialty or sub-specialty of the physician(s) whose care is under review.

Judicial Review

IMQ assists hospitals and other healthcare facilities by providing independent physician panelists to serve on judicial review panels and facilitate the judicial review process. Using IMQ’s physician panelists often enables hospitals and other healthcare organizations to fill their panels with objective, qualified physicians who are free of any conflict of interest. It also enables organizations to complete judicial reviews in a more timely manner because the IMQ panelists are available for consecutive days.

Professionalism (Ethics) Program

The IMQ Professionalism Program centers on both the legal and ethical dimensions of the practice of medicine in California, and provides physicians with a range of actions and resources to address present or future problems. The Medical Board of California recognizes the IMQ program as meeting its requirement for ethics training; however, attendees are also referred to the program as an intermediary remedy by medical staff or medical group leaders, attorneys, or their insurer.

The program is for physicians, dentists, physician assistants, and dental assistants. IMQ also offers a program for pharmacists.
