The Application Process for Initial CME Accreditation

Submit a letter of intent (LOI) that describes your organization and your reasons for seeking CME accreditation. This letter serves as an initial screen to determine whether an organization qualifies as an accredited CME provider.

Upon approval of the LOI, many organizations decide to complete a pre-application that assesses their readiness to comply with the required accreditation criteria and policies. IMQ reviews the pre-application and provides feedback, including any areas where there is need for change or clarification, before the organization submits an application for initial accreditation. There is a fee for the review of pre-applications.

Upon qualifying, each organization may take up to 24 months to submit an initial application that demonstrates compliance with the IMQ/CMA Criteria 1 – 3 and 7 – 12 and all accreditation policies. To demonstrate compliance, the application requires documentation for at least two educational activities that comply with criteria 2, 3 and 7 –  11. These activities can be conducted through joint sponsorship with an accredited CME provider, or they may be planned in compliance with the accreditation requirements but without offering CME credits. IMQ encourages, but does not require, non-accredited organizations to joint-sponsor these activities with accredited CME providers.

The period for submission of the initial application varies and depends on the time required by the organization to plan, conduct, and evaluate at least two educational activities. Most organizations complete the initial accreditation process within one year, and few require the 24 months allotted.
