Deciding on Initial Accreditation for Continuing Medical Education

The surveyor completes his/her assessment and submits findings to the IMQ/CMA Committee on Continuing Medical Education. The Committee makes all accreditation decisions, usually within two to three months.

Organizations successfully demonstrating compliance with the Initial Application requirements earn a decision of provisional accreditation. This is a two-year accreditation term, during which the organization is authorized to offer AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for its activities. Please note: a provisional accreditation does not allow for joint sponsorship of educational activities. Provisionally accredited organizations are obligated to pay all annual fees associated with maintaining its accreditation.

Once awarded a provisional accreditation, each organization must plan, conduct, and evaluate CME activities in compliance with all IMQ/CMA accreditation criteria and policies during its two-year term. To remain an accredited provider, the organization applies for accreditation prior to the expiration of its provisional accreditation term. There is no guarantee of reaccreditation; an organization must demonstrate that it was compliant with criteria 1-15 and all policies during its provisional accreditation term. Click here for more information about reaccreditation.
