OVERVIEW
Since 1979, the California Medical Association (CMA) provided services to detention facilities. This program was financed, in part, by the Federal Government and consisted of on-site reviews of medical programs in juvenile halls, jails and prisons throughout the United States. The Federal Government grant to the AMA was eliminated in 1982. In 1983, when the AMA ended its program, CMA leadership continued the program because the services protected the public and supported the integrity of correctional health practitioners. In 1996, the program was transferred to the Institute for Medical Quality.
